Juan Ortiz-Apuy
Juan Ortiz-apuy was born in Costa Rica in 1980 and lives and works in Montreal since 2003. Ortiz-Apuy has a BFA from Concordia University, Montreal (2008), a Post-graduate Diploma from the Glasgow School of Art, Scotland (2009), and a MFA from NSCAD University, Halifax (2011).
His work has been exhibited across Canada and internationally. Recent exhibitions include Museum London, Gallery 44, Gallery TPW, galerie antoine ertaskiran, The MacLaren Arts Centre, A Space Gallery, and the Quebec City Biennial: Manif d’Art 7. In 2011, he was the recipient of the Halifax Regional Municipality Contemporary Visual Art Award.
His work has been reviewed and published in various magazines, newspapers and books such Canadian Art, Le Devoir, The Gazette (Montreal), The Telegram (St. John’s), The Toronto Star, and at MOMUS.ca. Essays about his work can also be found in various catalogues and brochures.
Ortiz-apuy has recently completed artist-in-residency programs at Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art, the Atlantic Centre for the Arts, USA, and the Vermont Studio Center, USA. Upcoming solo exhibitions include Truck Contemporary and a residency at the Frans Masereel Centre in Belgium.
