Jane Jin Kaisen

Jane Jin Kaisen is a visual artist working with film, video installation, photography and performative practices. Born in Jeju Island in South Korea, transnationally adopted to Denmark, and having spent her adult life in-between Europe, the United States and Asia, her practice has unfolded at the junctions of multiple social, cultural and political realities. These contingencies inform her engagement with overarching themes of memory, migration, and translation at the intersection of personal and collective histories and understandings. While each of her art projects is driven by its own aesthetic and discursive inquiry, together they form a multi-faceted and in-depth survey of coloniality, war and militarism by engaging charged transnational histories and unresolved legacies of race, gender, class, cultural encounters and identity.

Kaisen holds an MFA from the University of California Los Angeles in Interdisciplinary Studio Art, an MA in Art Theory and Media Art from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and she was a 2007-08 fellow at the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program. She is currently a PhD candidate in artistic research at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts / University of Copenhagen where she is developing a concept of translating otherwise as artistic research. Her works have been presented widely as venues such as Videonale13 (DE), the 7th Liverpool Biennial (UK), the 6th Gwangju Biennial, the 2nd Incheon Women Artists Biennale, Leeum Samsung Museum of Art, Asia Culture Complex (KR), Gana Art New York, DePaul Art Museum, Vox Populi Gallery, Los Angeles Asia Pacific American Film Festival (USA), Kunsthallen Brandts, Museum of Contemporary Art Roskilde, The National Museum of Photography, Kunsthal Aarhus (DK), Malmö Konstmuseum (SE), Sørlandet Art Museum and Oslo Kunstforening (NO), Kyoto Arts Center, Fukouka Museum of Art, and Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival (JP), Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (PN) and Townhouse Gallery (EG).
