FAIR: Critical Distance at the Edition Art Book Fair
Featuring Half Letter Press and works by Marc Fischer/Public Collectors and Temporary Services, Magali Duzant, Graphic History Collective with Paul Buhle, Project 40 Collective, Mark Mulroney, Brandon Dalmer & Erin Ornstein, Maggie Groat, and Tings Chak; plus selected publications from Independent Curators International and selected catalogues and editions produced by Typology Projects and Critical Distance Centre for Curators
Critical Distance is pleased to participate in the 2017 Edition Art Book Fair, running concurrently with Art Toronto at Metro Toronto Convention Centre. For our second year at Edition, CDCC presents selections from the prolific and politically engaged output of Chicago-based artist-run publisher Half Letter Press. Half Letter Press is an experimental imprint initiated by Temporary Services, a three-person collective supporting people and projects that have had difficulty finding financial and promotional assistance through mainstream channels. Alongside our offerings from Half Letter Press will be a selection of related projects by co-director and artist Marc Fischer, including two series from his Public Collectors initiative, Hardcore Architecture and Library Excavations.
We are also pleased to kick off our newest initiative, the CDCC Curators’ Library/Bookshop and Reading Room. Through an introductory display of selected publications, journals, and reference works, we invite visitors to participate in the visioning process for an openly accessible space and collection of curatorially-focused references and resources. Through this initiative we will highlight the practical, experimental, theoretical, and aesthetic dimensions of publishing as a critical engagement with curating and exhibition-making in a diverse array of formats and approaches. A “short stack” display of representative works to be included in the collection will be accompanied by a participatory survey/wishlist for interested visitors to make suggestions for future additions to the collection. A sampling of recently produced publications from the NY-based Independent Curators International, including Apichatpong Weerasethakul Sourcebook: The Serenity of Madness and the Martha Wilson Sourcebook, will also be available for review and purchase.
And finally, we are pleased to present an eclectic array of artist’s books, publications, and editions selected or produced by CDCC members and participants including Noa Bronstein, Mirae Lee, Anthony Stepter, and many more. Representing the interests, passions, and approaches of just a few of our many collaborators and contributors, our presentation is a vibrant snapshot of a curatorially-focused community that continues to evolve and expand.
